To provide clients with all the conveniences they expect, PGGM’s key stakeholders aimed to deliver cheaper portfolio management and new functionalities within shorter production times.

As a Dutch not-for-profit cooperative pension fund service provider, PGGM offers clients pension management, asset management, and management advice. PGGM manages the pensions of various pension funds, affiliated employers, and their employees. On 30 June 2020, the company managed pension assets worth 246 billion euros for 4.4 million participants.

The Dutch pension landscape is drastically reforming, and agility and cost awareness are increasingly essential for this industry. PGGM, one of the Dutch leading pension fund service providers, wanted to improve its working methods and lower costs without compromising quality. A combination of an Agile IT department and Agile development process was imperative to achieve this goal. PGGM asked Qxperts to help introduce quality assurance and agile testing techniques to increase ROI.
Qxperts proposed multiple changes to help PGGM reach its goals. Firstly, we introduced the Test Automation Pyramid to enable the development team to create a higher-quality product by securing the right application tests at each level. Using the Agile Test Method, which enables large organizations to structure test-related processes in an agile way, helped PGGM immensely. Additionally, by introducing Specification by Example (SBE), Qxperts changed the team’s outlook on quality. We enabled teams to receive feedback faster by implementing running tests as soon as possible. The teams now receive aligned backlog tasks per role to ensure every team member contributes to testing activities.
One of the most significant results we achieved is a reduction of the release cycle by two weeks! We accelerated processes and freed up time to add customer value by, for example, involving business stakeholders in the refining stories phase. This eliminated the need for acceptance testing after the sprint. Additionally, we helped PGGM move from a testing strategy per application to user-story based testing. A radical change in how PGGM works is realized by the Test Automation Pyramid, which empowers PGGM’s teams to self-strategize. Finally, testing responsibilities are now delegated to team members, which gives PGGM’s Test, and Quality Assurance Leads more time to focus on innovation.
